“This scene perfectly summarized our poor half-season”

SVg Velbert will finish 2023 in last place in the Regionalliga West table. There are, of course, reasons for this.

In the previous 2022/2023 season, Sport- und Spielvereinigung Velbert marched through the Oberliga Niederrhein and had a big lead over the runners-up in the table. Promotion to the regional league was secured early on.

The team also got off to a good start once they reached the next level. SV Lippstadt was defeated on match day 1. However, this was followed by just one win and five draws before the winter break. Ten defeats on the other hand – the result: 18th place in the table.

They are already seven points adrift of the drop zone. The Velbert team still has the catch-up match against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen up its sleeve. But coach Dimitrios Pappas also knows that it will be very difficult to stay in the league.

… the first half of the season for SSVg Velbert: “It could and of course should have gone better. Unfortunately, we had a lot of bad luck. No luck and stupid individual mistakes were the rule. The crowning glory came in the Lower Rhine Cup quarter-finals. The cup exit in Ratingen really hurt us all.”

… the best moment of the past round? “The win against SV Lippstadt on matchday 1. That was a great start to the season. Of course, the derby win against Wuppertal is also one of the few positive experiences of the round so far.”

… the worst moment of the half-season? “The Ahlen game was definitely very bitter. We simply had to score the goals and win. We missed a lot of hundred percent opportunities there. The Gütersloh game also falls into this category. In the second half, we shot against the post from two meters out and then conceded the goal on the other side on the next counter-attack. That scene summed up our poor half of the season well.”

… the goals for 2024: “We need more points than in the first half of the season. And even that wouldn’t be enough. We have to play a really good round. We can do that. To do that, we need good preparation and a good start. We’ll get back to work on January 3. “
