Shock! Captain Sebastian Mai out for the rest of the season

MSV Duisburg will have to do without captain Sebastian Mai for the rest of the season. He suffered a serious injury.

In already difficult times, MSV Duisburg has to cope with some bad news. Captain Sebastian Mai will not play again this season.

The 30-year-old has suffered a cruciate ligament rupture. This was revealed by examinations after the third division match against 1860 Munich (1:4), in which Mai had to be substituted due to injury.

He had injured himself shortly after coming on as a substitute in the second half, without any input from the opponent. “It didn’t feel good. That’s fitting for a day like this. We hope he didn’t hurt himself quite so badly,” said coach Boris Schommers afterwards.

But the Zebras hoped in vain and will have to tackle the race to stay in the league without their leader, who has been used mainly in the center of the attack of late. “That’s a bitter setback that we have to digest first,” said Schommers in the media round before the home game against Hallescher FC on Tuesday evening (7 p.m., RS live ticker) and sent a “Cheer up, Basti” in the direction of the Dresden-born player.

With Marvin Bakalorz, the Meiderichern are currently missing another experienced player. Schommers estimated that the defensive player will be out for between four and six weeks following his knee injury. Chinedu Ekene, Pascal Köpke and Dennis Smarsch are also still missing

At least: In addition to Caspar Jander, who had to serve a yellow card against 1860 Munich, Benjamin Girth, who has been suffering from the flu recently, gives Schommers another option in attack. However, winter signing Daniel Ginczek will once again start up front, as Schommers announced on Tuesday.

And Marvin Knoll is also ready for the starting eleven. “He will lead the team onto the pitch as captain,” said Schommers about the defender, who has been suffering from a torn muscle fiber in recent weeks and sat on the bench for 90 minutes at the weekend.
