After two recent wins, FC Gütersloh suffered a 4-0 defeat against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen on matchday 22. FCG coach Julian Hesse criticized his team.
After two wins in a row, FC Gütersloh were beaten again on matchday 22 of the Regionalliga West. FCG lost 4:0 (0:2) to Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and, as in the last two home games, were already on the losing side in the early stages.
Julian Hesse, the Gütersloh coach, was not sparing with his criticism after the defeat: “We put in our worst performance of the season. We overslept for the first 15 minutes and weren’t on the pitch at all. After that, it was okay until half-time. In the second half, we weren’t present at all again, which is why it was a well-deserved defeat.”
Even though the newly promoted team were shown their limits against Oberhausen, Hesse still drew a few lessons from the defeat: “A game like this is still important to show us how far away we are from the top in terms of quality. And it showed how essential it is to show a huge amount of energy in every game. We didn’t do that against Oberhausen and lacked a lot of passion. We have to give 110 percent in every game to score points.”
As in the other defeats this year against Paderborn II (1:3) and Velbert (1:2), Gütersloh got off to a very poor start and fell behind by two goals early on. “That’s a recurring theme. In all three home games in the second half of the season, we were already two goals down after 15 or 20 minutes,” said the FCG manager, who was annoyed

Gütersloh midfielder Nico Buckmaier had also expected a different result. Especially because he himself played for Rot-Weiß Oberhausen in the 2021/22 season. He made 29 appearances in the cloverleaf jersey, scoring four goals and providing two assists. “Before the game, I would have said: Nice to see the lads again. But after they beat us 4:0 at home, it hurts a bit more,” said Buckmaier.
The 31-year-old is also frustrated by the opening phases of the last few home games. “I don’t think that’s a motivation thing or that we’re not awake. But we have to make sure we stop doing that. Especially when you fall behind early against an experienced team like Oberhausen, it’s a completely different game,” explained the Bochum native.
Gütersloh cannot afford another false start against their upcoming opponents, league leaders Alemannia Aachen. The two clubs will meet in the imperial city next Saturday (February 24, 2 p.m.). For Buckmaier, it’s a highlight: “These are the games we worked very hard for last year to get into this league. Nevertheless, it’s also a game where there are three points up for grabs.
