Next setback for Greiml, four professionals train individually

Leo Greiml is out again for FC Schalke 04. This means the season is probably over for the unlucky Austrian.

Another chapter has been added to Leo Greiml’s injury history. The unlucky central defender only returned to team training at FC Schalke 04 a few weeks ago following a cruciate ligament rupture.

Now the 22-year-old has suffered another setback. The injured knee has shown a reaction and has swollen up again. The Austrian will therefore have to cut back again for the time being. It is doubtful whether Greiml will be able to make his comeback in the current second division season.

He has been waiting almost a year for a competitive match for the S04 professionals. The cruciate ligament rupture suffered towards the end of preparations for this season was the second for the former Austria U21 international.

Originally, those responsible at the Royal Blues had hoped that Greiml would be an alternative again after the international break. After all, the options in central defense are few and far between due to Ron Schallenberg’s injury and Timo Baumgartl’s suspension

In addition to Tomas Kalas and vice-captain Marcin Kaminski, Ibrahima Cissé is currently the only other trained player fit to play in the center of defense. It is unlikely that the 23-year-old will start in the important home game against Karlsruher SC on Easter Sunday (1.30pm, RS live ticker). After all, Cissé hardly plays a role with the professionals and has been on a strenuous international trip in recent days. He made a guest appearance in Japan with the Malian U23s. On Tuesday morning, Cissé was back on the training pitch in Gelsenkirchen, but was visibly struggling during the runs at the end of the session.

The right defensive line also remains a problem area for Schalke ahead of the clash with KSC. Brandon Soppy is still unavailable due to muscular problems. The Frenchman completed an individual program on Tuesday. Schallenberg also still has to take a short break due to his muscle injury.

The Karlsruhe game is likely to come too soon for the duo. While Tobias Mohr was absent due to illness, Soppy and Schallenberg worked away from the team along with Danny Latza (calf strain) and Lino Tempelmann (knee complaints) – as did Timo Baumgartl. The demoted defender trained with the U23s on the adjacent pitch
