Mülheimer FC stops league leaders Baumberg’s run and deservedly wins 3:2. No surprise for proud coach Ahnet Inal.
After a long period of trepidation, the final whistle blew after 100 minutes of play: Mülheimer FC held on to their lead against Sportfreunde Baumberg and inflicted the first defeat on the leaders of the Oberliga Niederrhein after five wins in a row.
The promoted team from Mülheim thus extended their streak with a 3:2 home win: MFC are unbeaten at the Ruhrstadion in 2024, the fourth time in a row that Ahmet Inal’s side have scored in front of a home crowd.
And the Mülheim club fully deserved the three points, as in the previous match against ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen (2:2), Mülheim led 2:0 at the break. Obinna Bryan Asagwara (28′) and Harding Mac Stuell Beira with a remarkable goal (40′) were the scorers.
“The morale we’re showing at the moment – these are all bonus games in which we get the points – is of course brutal,” said a delighted coach Inal after the third home win of the year, which his opposite number Salah El Halimi also described as well-deserved. Inal was particularly impressed by the mental strength of his team. “I know how much the boys want this, how much the spectators want this. The boys work very well week in, week out and have fully embraced the relegation battle in the games. “

After the break, Baumberg made two changes, but the first actions belonged to the home side again, who made it 3:0 through Anil Yildirim. Inal explained: “We really wanted to intercept the ball in the first few minutes and switch over very quickly, and we did that well. The lads worked flat out for 60 or 70 minutes against the best team in the top division, and it’s normal for them to run out of steam at some point.”
With the strong run at home, MFC have secured important points in the fight to stay in the league ahead of the week off and still have everything in their own hands. “I’m very proud of what the boys have delivered, even if it was exciting again this time. And the fact that we can keep up today or against ETB is simply awesome,” said an enthusiastic head coach. For Inal, these successes are no coincidence: “I think we’ve worked hard for this. We play good soccer and the win against the league leaders is not a one-hit wonder.”
Mülheimer FC, who at least temporarily jumped to the safe shore, will now have a break from competitive matches, with the club having no games on matchday 26. The next point game is a match with the next top team. On April 14 (3 p.m.), the promoted team will face second-placed Germania Ratingen. A week earlier, the Oberliga club will play a test match at Bezirksliga side Germania Wuppertal
