A thumping in Paderborn – cellar child could set a new relegation record

FC Wegberg-Beeck is playing against relegation in the Regionalliga West. They could be relegated to the Mittelrheinliga for the fourth time. A record they would gladly do without.

The 1:4 at SC Paderborn II on Monday evening brought no improvement: FC Wegberg-Beeck are once again in the relegation battle in the Regionalliga West. This is nothing new for the fifteenth-placed team, having already been relegated three times since the regional league reform in 2012.

It was only last year that FC Wegberg-Beeck managed to return directly from the Mittelrheinliga after their third relegation in the 2021/22 season. The third relegation from the Regionalliga West (after the 2015/16 and 2017/18 relegations) marked a record at the time.

To prevent the team from extending this record even further, the coach was replaced in February 2024: Mark Zeh had to leave. Former assistant coach Mike Schmalenberg and youth head coach Stephan Houben are currently in charge. The two are supported by U17 coach Timo Rheindorf. A permanent solution to the coaching succession has not yet been determined.

In any case, the “relegation record” still stands today. The first “pursuers” have each been relegated twice.

SSVg Velbert are threatened with the third regional league relegation in the club’s history

These include SSVg Velbert (relegated in 13/14 and 15/16), which had long disappeared from the Regionalliga map. The Lions have been back since the 2023/24 season – but are currently bottom of the table. This is the third relegation in the club’s history.

In the 2022/23 season, SG Wattenscheid 09 was also shipwrecked for the second time since the 2019/20 season. SV Straelen, who were also relegated at the time, also have two following their relegation in 2018/19.

KFC Uerdingen were also relegated to the fifth tier twice. The Krefeld club was relegated in the 2014/15 and 2021/22 seasons, while TuS Erndtebrück also had to drop to the top division twice: in the 2015/16 and 2017/18 seasons. FC Kray (relegated in 12/13 and 15/16) has also been off the regional league map for some time now.

The list of teams with two regional league relegations is completed by SV Bergisch Gladbach (12/13, 20/21) and Sportfreunde Siegen (14/15, 16/17).
