Domenico Tedesco is no longer the coach of RB Leipzig. The Bundesliga football club made the announcement on Wednesday. A successor has not yet been appointed.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was probably RB Leipzig’s dismal opening defeat in the Champions League 1:4 against Shakhtyor Donetsk.

“We have an overall responsibility for RB Leipzig and want to achieve our goals. Therefore, in the overall consideration, we have come to the conclusion that we need a new impetus,” managing director Oliver Mintzlaff said in a club statement. He said the decision was very difficult for him.

Tedesco has to pack his bags just 109 days after winning the DFB Cup. The 36-year-old’s downward trend in the league with only five points from the first five games and then the CL defeat Donetsk became his undoing. For Tedesco, events are practically repeating themselves. He had already been released by Schalke 04 – his last engagement in Germany before Leipzig – in March 2018 after a defeat in the top flight.

Of course, Tedesco had earned himself a bonus by winning the title and the outstanding second half of the season. But in the fast-moving world of football, that bonus obviously didn’t last too long. When Leipzig had only two draws after two games, club boss Mintzlaff spoke of a “shitty start” and thus triggered the discussion about Tedesco.

The manager is thus once again looking for a new coach. Tedesco had only been hired in December as Jesse Marsch’s successor. In the summer, Tedesco had rejected an early extension of his contract, which runs until 2023. Now the trail leads to Rose, who lives in a Leipzig suburb. Fittingly, Max Eberl is to be signed as the new sporting director. Rose and Eberl already worked together at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Marco Rose was already being talked about as a possible successor after the embarrassing 0:4 loss at Eintracht Frankfurt on the most recent Bundesliga matchday.
