Rot-Weiss Essen versus Rot-Weiß Oberhausen: This Lower Rhine Cup final – Saturday, May 25, 3.45 p.m., live ticker – will not only electrify both fan camps and those responsible, such as RWO President Hajo Sommers, but also many former players of both traditional clubs.

RS caught up with some former players ahead of this hot cup final.

Erwin Koen (now coach in the Netherlands at fifth division club VV Trekvogels, once played for Rot-Weiss Essen): “I’m looking forward to the final. But there can only be one winner: RWE! Rot-Weiss have a duty to win the final. They have played a great third division season and are the higher class club than Oberhausen. Now it’s time to reward themselves for a great season in this final.”

Marcel Landers (now coach at regional league club Arminia Klosterhardt, once played for Rot-Weiß Oberhausen): “Of course, Essen are the favorites. They have a home game, RWO are the underdogs. But they can cope with this role. If Oberhausen get into the game well, then anything is possible. I’m betting and hoping for RWO – a 4:3 after penalties.”

Mario Klinger (currently still a player at A-league club FC Stoppenberg and, from July 1, playing assistant coach at district league club Vogelheimer SV, formerly active for Rot-Weiss Essen and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen): “I actually want to maintain neutrality here. But if I’m honest, I think RWE are stronger. Anything is possible in the cup, but in the end Rot-Weiss wins 2:0 against Rot-Weiß.”

Dennis Brinkmann (Head of Youth Sports at Arminia Klosterhardt, once played for Rot-Weiss Essen): “Due to the strength of the team, Rot-Weiss Essen will win the game. They are playing a great season and will crown it with the cup win.”

Hans-Günter Bruns (head of sport at Oberliga club Sportfreunde Hamborn 07, former RWO coach who led the “Malocher” from the 4th to the 2nd division): “I haven’t been interested in that for a very long time.”

Achim Weber (managing director of a marketing agency, once active for Rot-Weiss Essen and Rot-Weiss Oberhausen): “Advantage Essen. They are playing a very good season. Nothing has changed at Rot-Weiss Oberhausen due to the change of coach in the second half of the season, so Rot-Weiss Essen have a clear advantage. But the cup, as hackneyed as it sounds, has its own rules. It’s a knockout game where anything is possible. But it would be surprising if Rot-Weiss Essen didn’t win. “
