Wehen Wiesbaden must go down, Jahn Regensburg rejoices in the 2nd Bundesliga

Jahn Regensburg conquer the last place in the 2nd Bundesliga for the new season. SV Wehen are annoyed about two penalties that were not given.

SSV Jahn Regensburg have returned to the 2nd Bundesliga thanks in particular to Dominik Kother.

The left winger scored the winner in the relegation second leg of coach Joe Enochs’ team’s 2:1 (1:0) win at SV Wehen Wiesbaden on Tuesday (45th + 2 minutes). In addition, Konrad Faber scored for the third-placed side after a penalty flurry at the other end (47′) following work by Kother.

After the 2-2 draw in the first leg, the Hessians were unable to capitalize on their home advantage on Tuesday evening despite a late goal from top scorer Ivan Prtajin (82) and will have to return to the 3rd division after just one year.

However, the Wiesbaden side were at odds with referee Martin Petersen: seconds after the restart in the second half, the Stuttgart man did not award a penalty when Franko Kovacic was knocked over by Oscar Schönfelder. Faber made it 2-0 on the ensuing counter-attack and the hosts also claimed a handball in the opposition penalty area in the closing stages

In front of 11,000 spectators in the Brita-Arena, Regensburg celebrated their direct promotion. Left winger Kother had kept Regensburg’s hopes alive last Friday with a goal and an assist Jahn had already made it one class higher via relegation twice before: in 2012, the Upper Palatinate side beat Karlsruher SC and in 2017, TSV 1860 Munich.

Wehen had secured promotion to the 2nd division last year in the relegation play-off against Arminia Bielefeld. After a strong first half of the season, SVWW ended up in a tailspin and parted ways with head coach Markus Kauczinski at the end of April.

Interim coach Nils Döring – the 44-year-old had had to take a seat in the stands in the first leg due to suspension – was able to coach his team from the bench again. After a quarter of an hour, he had to watch as Kother shot just wide of the goal.

Prtajin missed the first good chance for Wiesbaden, who were without a win in eleven competitive matches, five minutes later. Otherwise, the Hessians hardly created any chances in a hectic game with a number of deficiencies. After going 2-1 down, they chased the equalizer in vain
