Riots and police intervention after promotion match – “This is really sad”

Sportfreunde Bulmke have been promoted to the district league. After the 1:0 win against VfB Kirchhellen, however, there were some unpleasant scenes.

The deciding match for promotion to the Bezirksliga between VfB Kirchhellen and Sportfreunde Bulmke was eagerly awaited. Both clubs were confident champions in their respective Kreisliga A groups and faced off in the promotion match on Thursday afternoon.

The match was played at the SC Hassel pitch. The crowd was huge. A total of almost 3,000 fans made the pilgrimage to the clash between the two district league teams. After more than 100 (long stoppage time) intense and exciting minutes on equal terms, Bulmke narrowly prevailed 1:0 and celebrated promotion to the district league.

Bakir Kubilay scored the goal of the day in the 81st minute. However, VfB Kirchhellen still has a chance of promotion. In the second relegation round with a first and second leg, the Kreisliga club will face TSV Fichte Hagen.

Back to the game: Kirchhellen had the field advantage in the first half, but without really becoming compelling. After the break, Bulmke became more active and created one or two good chances. However, there were no big chances for either side – until Kubilay converted a counter-attack in the closing stages to score the winner

The joy of promotion was naturally great, but there were some unpleasant scenes after the final whistle. A video obtained by this editorial team shows how Bulmke players cheered exuberantly and provocatively in front of the Kirchhellen fans who had traveled with them. This was followed by rioting and violence.

Forecasting asked both clubs: What actually happened after the game?

What happened afterwards is, of course, unpleasant. The entire Bulmke bench and their supporters stormed towards us and then laughed at, shouted at and insulted our players who were lying on the floor. That’s not fair play. Of course, some of us got involved too. I called the police afterwards and there were a few people injured. There was kicking, spitting and bottles were also thrown.

Marco Samland

Marco Samland (Head of Public Relations at VfB Kirchhellen): “It was actually a great day. The weather was great and there were an incredible number of fans on site. Insane! You can say about the game that we simply didn’t make it in sporting terms. The defeat was not undeserved. So congratulations to Bulmke. What happened afterwards was of course unpleasant.

It was all very unpleasant. As VfB Kirchhellen, we totally distance ourselves from these events. “

All the people who came to blows afterwards were not my players. These people were actually on our side, but we had nothing to do with them. We had no influence on that. I distance myself from people like that. That’s not part of soccer. This shitty action has ruined things, I have to be honest.

Sascha Wolf

Sascha Wolf (ex-professional and coach of Sportfreunde Bulmke): “The game was actually very fair, from both sides. The atmosphere was great. That’s why it’s just a shame that it ended like this. It’s really sad that it escalated like that. Of course, it wasn’t right for us to celebrate in front of the opposing fans. Of course, they also allowed themselves to be provoked. There was provocation from both sides. But again, we simply shouldn’t have gone over there and celebrated among ourselves. I’m sorry that we celebrated there.

But the people who got into a fight afterwards weren’t my players. These people were actually on our side, but we had nothing to do with them. We had no influence on that. I distance myself from people like that. That’s not part of soccer. This shitty action has ruined things, I have to be honest. Nevertheless, I’m naturally pleased about the promotion. “
