With Europa League experience – once celebrated goalkeeping talent arrives

Just over two years ago, he was still on the pitch in the Europa League, and now Julian Pollersbeck has been unveiled at promoted second division side SSV Jahn Regensburg.

Goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck will also be playing in the Bundesliga 2 in the coming season. The 29-year-old is turning his back on 1. FC Magdeburg and joining SSV Jahn Regensburg. This was announced by the Upper Palatinate club on Thursday, June 27.

“We are delighted that Julian has decided to join SSV Jahn. After a difficult time for him recently, we want to support him in getting back to his performance potential and firmly believe that he will find the right conditions here. With his personality, Julian fits very well into the team structure,” said Sporting Director Achim Beierlorzer.

Goalkeeping coach Philipp Tschauner added: “In Julian, we’ve found a strong goalkeeper who will strengthen the quality of our goalkeeping team both in terms of width and at the top. He has good skills in goal defense and interprets his goalkeeping game boldly and offensively.”

Pollersbeck is a native of Upper Bavaria, comes from the youth ranks of Wacker Burghausen and made his breakthrough at 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 2016. He made 78 appearances for the Red Devils.

International experience with Lorient

The 1.95-metre goalkeeper then moved to Hamburger SV in the summer of 2017. In three years at HSV, he made ten Bundesliga appearances and 37 second division games. His time in Hamburg ended in the summer of 2020 when Pollersbeck joined French first division club Olympique Lyon.

He was unable to establish himself with the French side, but made two appearances in the Europa League in addition to six league and three cup matches. His last to date dates back to April 14, 2022, when he stood between the posts in a 3-0 defeat to West Ham United.

He moved on to FC Lorient in the summer of 2022 and then to 1. FC Magdeburg last season. He did not make any appearances for the Bördestädter. He was a regular keeper for the German U21 national team during the successful European Championship in 2017.

“Pollersbeck’s fingers are itching”

Now things are set to pick up again in Regensburg: “I feel great anticipation and gratitude. SSV Jahn have placed their trust in me after a season that hasn’t been so easy recently. I now want to give my all on the pitch and can hardly wait for training to start. My fingers are itching,” said Pollersbeck.

He continued: “I’m an open, communicative guy. I’ve had to deal with a lot of ups and downs in my career, which has shaped me. Now I’m really keen to get to know the team and the coaching staff. “
