Scare for Justin Heekeren at the training camp

On the first day of the training camp in Mittersill, FC Schalke 04 had a moment of shock. Goalkeeper Justin Heekeren was injured

Scary second at the first training session of the second division club FC Schalke 04 during the first session at the camp in Mittersill: Goalkeeper Justin Heekeren had to stop the session prematurely, his left hand was bandaged.

What happened? The four Schalke keepers took turns in goalkeeping training. The goalkeepers who were not in goal were waiting next to the post for the next change. But a shot bounced against the far post – and from there against Heekeren’s hand. He immediately cried out and called the team doctors around Patrick Ingelfinger.

They cooled Heekeren’s hand and bandaged it. A short time later, training was over – and Heekeren took the tape off again to run out. A scare or a serious injury? That will be decided in the evening

The 23-year-old Heekeren has returned after six months on loan from Belgian second division club Patro Eisden Maasmechelen and forms the quartet of keepers together with new signing Ron-Thorben Hoffmann (Eintracht Braunschweig, came on a free transfer), Luca Podlech (came from the U19s) and senior goalkeeper Michael Langer.

The first Schalke training session in Mittersill lasted around an hour and a half – it was a relaxed warm-up with a few running laps and shooting practice. All 28 players were on the pitch. Coach Karel Geraerts was delighted that so many fans were present: “It’s incredible for me to see so many people. I’m very happy, we brought the sun with us. We hope to have a good week.”

The intensity will be increased from Tuesday, said Geraerts. The coach is looking forward to the test matches against Midtyjlland (Wednesday) and Kiev (Saturday): “Those are two good games. For me, it’s important to see automatisms, that everyone gives it their all.” The first training session was a good start
