Serious riots in Dortmund before Netherlands v England

Before the European Championship semi-final between the Netherlands and England, supporters from both camps got into a brawl in Dortmund city center

With their big fan march, the Dutch fans provided beautiful and peaceful images from Dortmund on Wednesday afternoon. Around 100,000 Oranje fans turned Dortmund into a big orange party. Around 25,000 English fans are also in the city

However, there were also serious riots on the fringes of this fan march. Videos circulating on the internet show a serious brawl breaking out in front of the “Sausalitos” bar in Dortmund’s city center. English fans had taken up residence in the bar and clashed with the Dutch fans.

After minor provocations, the situation quickly escalated. A large part of the bar inventory positioned outside was also damaged. Tables and glasses were thrown, mainly by the Dutch, in the direction of the English, who then retreated into the bar. A television that had been positioned outside to broadcast the game was also hit.

Police break up the brawl

Afterwards, the bar staff tried to calm the confusing situation and prevent further damage from occurring. However, the Dutch went after them and threw more crockery and furniture into the bar. As a video from the “Ruhr24” portal shows, the police were on the scene after just under two minutes and intervened.

It is not the first brawl that the Ruhr region has experienced at this European Championship. Even before the group match between England and Serbia in Gelsenkirchen, there was a huge row. Even then, chairs flew through the air and windows were broken.

Let’s hope that the evening remains calm as it progresses and that the focus remains on the sport. The Dutch and the English will meet in Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion from 9pm. Spain’s opponent for next Sunday’s final in Berlin will be determined
