Former Schalke professional Johannes Geis is looking for a new club. He has terminated his contract with 1. FC Nürnberg.
The days of Johannes Geis at Schalke 04 are long gone. The defensive midfielder didn’t really get lucky either during his loan to Sevilla FC or after his move to 1. FC Köln. That changed in 2019 with his move to 1. FC Nürnberg. Geiss spent five years at the club – and there won’t be any more.
The 30-year-old and FCN have agreed to terminate his contract, the second division club announced on Tuesday. After 142 games, twelve goals and 26 assists, Geis will have to look for a new club.
“I would like to thank all the club players for the past very intensive and turbulent years. I always left my heart on the pitch and wish my former teammates and the fantastic club fans all the very best for the future,” said the Schweinfurt native on his departure.
For much of his time in Nuremberg, Geis played an important role in defensive midfield, leading the way as a leader. But last season, he lost his regular place for good. He was only part of the starting eleven three times

There are no indications yet as to which club Geis will continue his career with. For the time being, he will keep himself fit in the Nuremberg U23s and says: “My goal is to attack again in the right environment. Fortunately, I’ve never been seriously injured and I’m fitter than ever. That’s why I want to take my time looking for a new club where I can bring all my experience and strengths to bear.”
The set-piece specialist gained some of this experience at Schalke between 2015 and early 2019. He once came to the Ruhr region from Mainz for around ten million. However, Geis was only able to partially fulfill the high expectations. He played 61 competitive matches for the Revier club (five goals, eight assists).
It is now clear that there will be no reunion when Schalke visit Nuremberg on the second matchday of the new season. “We would like to thank Johannes for his commitment in the FCN jersey over the past five years. We wish him all the best for his sporting and personal future,” said sporting director Olaf Rebbe.
