Injury shock overshadows Schonnebeck’s liberation strike

After just one win in seven Oberliga games, SpVg Schonnebeck landed the hoped-for liberation blow against VfB Hilden with a surprising 4:3 victory.

With a 4-3 win over VfB Hilden, SpVg Schonnebeck surprisingly put an exclamation mark on the bottom of the table and landed an important liberation blow on matchday 8 of the Oberliga Niederrhein.

Coach Dirk Tönnies’ team started the game brilliantly. After a mistake by Hilden goalkeeper Yannic Lenze, Schonnebeck striker Marwin Studtrucker scored to make it 1:0 (5th), only two minutes later the 32-year-old increased the lead to 2:0. Tönnies saw the top start as the prerequisite for the home victory. “We got off to a great start. But then we get the 1:2 too quickly and Hilden is back in it. That was really annoying.

The aforementioned 2-1 was also scored only a little later by Pascal Weber, who skilfully converted a long ball for the equaliser (9th). Afterwards, there was an open exchange of blows in which both teams played with open sights. Kevin Kehrmann made it 3:1 (22), before Talha Demir (29) restored the gap with a long shot.

“We don’t have to get the 3:2. In the first half we actually have to lead 4:2, but Nermin Badnjevic’s chance is superbly saved by the keeper. And so one thing leads to another and we make the game more exciting than we have to,” criticised the Schonnebeck coach after the game.

Three injury absences – still the late victory

The home team then had to digest a shock shortly before the break: Double goal scorer Studtrucker remained down after a corner kick and held his knee. After minutes of treatment, he had to be carried off the pitch by the doctors. “I have to praise the boys. The way they coped with the shock was amazing. We needed the win today, but we really paid dearly for it,” Tönnies remarked. In addition to the Essen goal scorer, Georgios Ketsatis (50th) and substitute Simon Skuppin (67th) were also forced off in the second half due to injury.

In exactly this phase, the guests equalised through Luca Majetic in the 54th minute to make it 3:3. VfB coach Tim Schneider was impressed by his team’s comeback: “We came back superbly after the early setbacks. Big compliments to the boys. In the end, we still lacked a little bit of luck.” When it looked as if both teams would have to settle for a draw, substitute Kingsley Sinclair scored the winner in the very last minute (90.+4).

Schonnebeck coach Tönnies sees the victory as a reward for the hard work of the previous weeks:” We have had a lot of bad luck lately. Today we had the luck that we have been lacking lately. I’m proud of the team and we hope that this is the liberation blow for us now.” The Swallows were able to pick up three important points and thus take an important step out of the crisis, Hilden, on the other hand, have to put away their second defeat in a row.
