Fans ask ex-Schalke pro Max Meyer to extend his contract

Max Meyer let an offer from FC Luzern slip away, and the fans want clarity. Why is the former Schalke player hesitating with the decision?

Contract number two is ready to be signed. And the fans of FC Lucerne have been calling on Max Meyer on Instagram for some time to commit to the Swiss Super League club FC Lucerne for several more years.

“They are slowly beginning to want clarity as to whether he will stay beyond the summer or not,” writes the Swiss newspaper Blick, referring to the pleas of the supporters. But the former Schalke player still has not committed to his future.

“We are still in good and open discussions with Max and hope to be able to announce a decision as soon as possible,” FCL sports director Remo Meyer told Blick. One thing is clear: the first division club from central Switzerland would immediately extend the contract with the midfielder, who has had an eventful career and, after numerous setbacks, rediscovered the fun of football at FCL and enjoys the trust of those in charge there.

Meyer is grateful for this and is enjoying his second spring, even though he left the first contract offer at the end of the year unanswered and was not always satisfied with his substitutions recently. Neither, incidentally, is his girlfriend: according to Blick, she recently shouted “stupid or what” loudly in the direction of the dugout.

No longer the great Schalke promise

Meyer has already worn the captain’s armband of the Swiss team for several weeks, and his role as a leader could be expanded in the long term, also because in Ardon Jashari, another key player, will probably be gone in the summer.

But why is Meyer still hesitating? Because as a transfer-free player, he is free to decide where he wants to continue his career (with appropriate offers). Because maybe he wants to try again in a bigger league, maybe even in the Bundesliga? And because he is no longer the young Schalke prospect he once was, but now 28 years old, so this is likely to be his last big contract. All of this is speculation, but what is definitely verifiable is that the management and fans of FC Luzern would like to see Max Meyer in the FCL jersey after the summer break.
