In the top game of the 3rd division, Rot-Weiss Essen fought hard for a 2:2 (2:1) at Dynamo Dresden. Felix Götze injured his head in the final phase.
The frustration was obviously great among the Dynamo Dresden supporters. In the top game of the 3rd division against Rot-Weiss Essen, the promotion candidates only managed a 2:2 (1:2) draw despite their overwhelming superiority.
In the added time of this turbulent game, some of the home fans showed why the club has been fighting unsuccessfully against its bad reputation in German football for years. RWE defender Felix Götze was hit so hard in the head by Dresden’s Jakob Lemmer that he went to the ground and immediately started bleeding heavily. The game was over for the key player from Essen.
As the brother of Rio World Champion Mario Götze was carried off the pitch on a stretcher, loud “goodbye” calls from the Dynamo fan block accompanied him. The paramedics protected the Essen player with umbrellas from missiles from the corner.
Andreas Mann, commentator for the broadcasting station Magenta Sport, described the calls from the Dynamo supporters as “impious” and “from the bottom of the barrel”.
RWE defender Felix Götze injured – Dabrowski’s response
Since Rot-Weiss Essen had already used up all of its substitutions, it had to play the remaining three minutes with a player less. They managed to do so, but there was great concern about Götze afterwards. “We hope that it’s just a laceration and that Felix hasn’t sustained any fractures,” said RWE coach Christoph Dabrowski on Magenta Sport.
For the Essen team, it was a lucky draw considering the course of the game. Dynamo played spectacularly well in the first half. Only the outstanding RWE keeper Jakob Golz ensured an open game with a handful of brilliant saves.
Cedric Harenbrock (7th minute) and Thomas Eisfeld (35th minute) twice put the visitors in the lead. Tom Zimmerschied (11th and 47th minute) equalized the score each time. The game at the Rudolf Harbig Stadium was watched by 30,387 spectators.
