It’s over after extra time! St. Pauli celebrates cup victory in the neighborhood

Cup victory in the neighborhood: FC St. Pauli has reached the last sixteen of the DFB Cup after extra time.

The second division leaders defeated Schalke 04 at home thanks to a significant improvement in performance with 2:1 (1:1, 0:1) after extra time, inflicting the next setback on Bundesliga relegated team FC Schalke 04.

Marcin Kaminski (16th) put the guests in the lead and gave the Royal Blues hope of their second win under new coach Karel Geraerts.

But Marcel Hartel (57th) scored from the penalty spot to equalize, before Johannes Eggestein (102nd) made sure of the win. This is the second time in the last 18 years that Hamburg have reached the last 16.

For Schalke, on the other hand, it was the second time in the last two seasons that they had been knocked out in the second round – and deservedly so. Three days after their league victory (3:2 against Hannover 96), the guests came under increasing pressure in the second half despite taking the lead at half-time.

While St. Pauli, with the self-confidence of eleven unbeaten games in the league, kept their cool and played with more and more dominance with every minute, Schalke caved in more and more – and conceded the late goal that knocked them out.
