RWO celebrates comeback victory against “feared opponent” Wiedenbrück

Recently, Rot-Weiß Oberhausen had mostly struggled against SC Wiedenbrück, but now RWO managed an important win to keep in touch with the top.

On the 12th matchday of the Regionalliga West, Rot-Weiß Oberhausen faced a bogeyman of recent years. Despite falling behind early on, RWO was able to come back this time and celebrated a well-deserved 3-1 home victory against SC Wiedenbrück.

Of the last eight games against SCW, the clover leaves have only won once, with Wiedenbrück taking the three points five times. One or two RWO fans must have become nervous when Jan-Lukas Liehr gave the guests an early lead at the Niederrhein Stadium (11th).

The home team were now also alert and played with more pressure, Nico Klaß missed from a promising position after a corner (28th), and shortly before that Eric Gueye had tested guest keeper Marcel Hölscher. Shortly before half-time, both Denis Donkor and Matona-Glody Ngyombo (43′) missed the equalizer. So SCW went into the dressing room with a lucky lead.

And the Oberhausen team got off to a dream start: Kerem Yalcin got the ball on the left edge of the box and sank the ball into the top right corner to make it 1-1 (46′). And RWO just kept going, Timur Mehmet Kesim (50′) and Tarsis Bonga (51′) made it 3-1 within a very short space of time!

That initially took the visitors’ breath away, while the red-whites continued to press. The fourth goal did not come, however, so the visitors still had faint hopes of a late comeback. But RWO’s back line stood firm and rarely allowed Wiedenbrück to score.

So it remained a 3-1 victory for the hosts, who remain in the top group of the league. For Wiedenbrück it remains a relegation place.

For Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, the Regionalliga continues on Friday evening (October 25th) at Schalke 04 II. The SC Wiedenbrück welcomes promoted team Eintracht Hohkeppel to a basement duel at 2 p.m. the next day.
