VfL Bochum has chosen its savior. Dieter Hecking is to realize the next relegation avoidance miracle.
VfL Bochum has a new head coach. Dieter Hecking takes over from Peter Zeidler, who is on leave. What was reported on Sunday was confirmed by the club on Monday.
He will initially receive a contract until the end of the current season. He is to be officially introduced at a press conference on Tuesday.
Markus Feldhoff, who took over the team from Zeidler on an interim basis, is to take on other, as yet undefined, tasks in the club. This also means that Hecking will probably bring his own assistants with him.
He takes on a Herculean task in Bochum, because VfL is still waiting for its first competitive victory. In the DFB Cup, the first round was against second division side Jahn Regensburg, and in the league, VfL is lagging behind completely.
After nine match days, the gap to the 16th place, which would guarantee a play-off spot, is already seven points. And now the difficult tasks against Bayer Leverkusen, at VfB Stuttgart and at FC Augsburg are on the agenda.
There are easier starting programs for a coach taking over the Bundesliga’s last team. But Hecking fits perfectly into the profile that the club has communicated the new coach should have. Experience in the Bundesliga is important, the new coach must be able to shake up the team and, above all, identify with the task. Because it could hardly be more difficult than it is at the moment.
