Michael Zorc has been elected to the supervisory board at Borussia Dortmund. This means he is back at BVB after a break of just over two years.
Former sports director Michael Zorc is back at Borussia Dortmund. The 62-year-old was elected to the Bundesliga soccer club’s supervisory board on Monday. Zorc has already worked for the Westphalia-based club as a professional, sporting director and, most recently, as sporting director until 2022.
“I want to make my experience and expertise available to the committee,” Zorc said at the beginning of the Annual General Meeting of Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA.
Managing Director Hans-Joachim Watzke assured that he had “persuaded” Zorc to stand for the position over “many hours”. “He already thought he was in the evening sun,” joked Watzke. “I’m happy that someone who has been at my side at BVB all this time is running for the Supervisory Board.”
Zorc had initially presented himself humorously to the shareholders. “I would like to briefly introduce myself, my name is Michael Zorc, I am 62 years old, married and have three children – and, for those who are interested, two grandchildren,” he said on the podium.
Because both the Chairman Christian Kullmann and Bodo Löttgen are leaving BVB’s Supervisory Board, two seats have been vacated – Christian Schmid was also elected. Matthias Bäumer, Judith Dommermuth, Bernd Geske, Ulrich Leitermann, Reinhold Lunow and Bernhard Pellens were confirmed by the shareholders for the next four years on the Supervisory Board.
Zorc had not worked in professional soccer since leaving BVB as sporting director. Zorc spent his entire career in Dortmund. During his playing days, he became a club legend after making 572 appearances as a record number of appearances.
After hanging up his boots, Zorc switched to management. From 1998 to 2005, he worked as the club’s sporting director, and then as its sports director. Zorc celebrated three league titles and three DFB Cup wins as a manager. On top of that, he won two league titles, one DFB Cup and the 1997 Champions League as a player. (with SID)
