“Very, very stupid” – Götze struggles with clean sheets in Munich

Felix Götze returned to the starting lineup for 1860 Munich, but was unable to prevent the 2-0 defeat. He is annoyed about ‘stupid mistakes’ and is looking forward to the top matches.

In addition to the negative news that goalkeeper Jakob Golz would be unavailable against 1860 Munich, there was also positive news before the postponed game on Tuesday evening: Felix Götze, the stabilizing force in the Essen defense, was fit again.

However, the central defender was no longer able to intervene when RWE conceded both goals, which were largely due to his own mistakes. “It was just two stupid mistakes again,” said the representative of captain Vinko Sapina after the 2-0 defeat on MagentaSport. ”We keep giving the goals away, and then it’s not that easy when you’re playing away and trailing by two goals.”

“We didn’t really allow much more,” said the 25-year-old, who summed up: ‘It was just a bad day.’

However, it is now important to shake off this setback as quickly as possible, after all, Götze and his team have a tough program ahead of them. RWE will face league leaders Jahn Regensburg as early as Saturday. This will be followed by the home game against third-placed Ulm (Saturday, February 17, 2 p.m.) and the trip to second-placed Dynamo Dresden (Saturday, February 24, 2 p.m.).

It’s great to play against the top teams. It’ll be a real test of strength.

A glance at the calendar certainly makes Götze very excited. “It’s great to play against the top teams. It will be a real test of strength. We can really show why we are up there.” The defensive leader is convinced: “If we avoid making mistakes, then anything is possible.”

The circumstances, however, make it anything but easy for the fifth-placed team, at least for the game in Regensburg. The team first has to travel from Munich back home, only to travel south again to Regensburg a few days later. “It’s definitely easier the other way around, but that’s just part of football,” explained Götze. “We’ll try to do a lot to recharge our batteries. There won’t be much time for training, but we have a good team. We’ll see that we’re fit again on Saturday and then: full steam ahead!”
