Italian football legend Andrea Pirlo has joined Turkish first division side Karagümrük SK from Istanbul as coach. The 2006 World Cup winner and former Juventus coach is due to take up his new post on 1 July

Coach Andrea Pirlo has a new club around a year after parting ways with Juventus Turin. The 2006 World Cup winner will be in charge of the Turkish first division club Karagümrük SK from Istanbul. The club announced on Sunday that the 43-year-old former midfielder will be officially presented as the new coach on Tuesday and will take up his post on 1 July.

Pirlo became coach of Juventus Turin’s second team in 2020. He then took over the senior team until summer 2021. Since the end of his engagement, Pirlo has been without a coaching job.

As a player, Pirlo was a star at Juventus Turin. He was known for his precise passes and played over 160 competitive games between 2011 and 2014.

Karagümrük finished eighth in the previous championship. The squad includes Emre Mor, a former Borussia Dortmund player, and Levent Mercan, who is on loan from Schalke 04.
