On Sunday, the Ludwigspark Stadium of 1. FC Saarbrücken was still under water. Now, work is being done at full speed to find a solution to enable the game against FC Bayern to go ahead.
The game between 1. FC Saarbrücken and Dynamo Dresden on Sunday resembled a water battle. After 45 minutes, referee Arne Aarnink decided to abandon the game at 0-0 because there was too much rainwater on the pitch.
But the next big highlight for FCS is scheduled for Wednesday (8:45 p.m.) at the Ludwigspark Stadium. Record champions FC Bayern Munich are coming to the Ludwigspark Stadium in the second round of the DFB Cup. Tickets for the game have been sold out for weeks, with 16,003 spectators managing to get hold of a ticket.
However, it is questionable whether they will be able to see the game on Wednesday. This is because it is expected to continue raining in Saarland on Tuesday and Wednesday. The pitch will therefore not have time to recover.
The common goal of all parties involved is to ensure that the game can take place on Wednesday.
City of Saarbrücken
When asked by SID, the city of Saarbrücken announced on Monday: “The common goal of all parties involved is to ensure that the game can take place on Wednesday.” To this end, the pitch is being closely examined and treated. In addition, an aerator – a machine that punches holes in the ground and then fills them with sand to make it playable when wet – has been purchased at short notice in consultation with the German Football Association.
The city reported that the grass had already improved thanks to these measures. However, it remains to be seen whether it will be good enough to host a football match on Wednesday evening without an increased risk of injury.
A cancellation should play into Bayern Munich’s hands, at least in the short term, as they have an important top match against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (6:30 p.m.). However, postponing the game is likely to prove difficult, as FCB are due to play Galatasaray in the Champions League after the BVB game. This is followed by an international break, before the next English week with the Champions League game against Copenhagen at the end of November. The round of 16 is then scheduled for the following week, on December 5 and 6.
