ETB SW Essen’s turf debut against VfB Hilden was unsuccessful. Nevertheless, those responsible and Essen’s mayor are looking to the future with optimism.
ETB SW Essen’s turf debut against VfB Hilden on Sunday (October 20) was a disappointment. Before the game, the spectators, officials, and even Essen’s mayor, Thomas Kufen, were euphoric.
This euphoria was somewhat dampened by the final score (1:2). Nevertheless, the “sadness” over the lost points will only last for a short time. Despite two consecutive losses, Schwarz-Weiß Essen is still in the running for a promotion spot.
It is not only the sporting situation that gives cause for hope at the Uhlenkrug. The renovation of ETB’s historic stadium is in full swing. The previous games were played on artificial turf, but the match against Hilden was the first on the new real grass.
Essen’s mayor, Thomas Kufen, was the guest of honor who kicked off the first game on the new turf. “Schwarz-Weiß Essen is a flagship for the city. It’s a club with a long tradition. Investments have been made here for the future, and we are very proud of the results,” said Kufen before the game against VfB Hilden.
However, work on the “Uhlenkrug construction site” is not yet complete. Essen’s mayor added: “The running track and work on the stands are still to follow. But it will only work if we all pull together. The board is doing a great job.”
Tim Schneider raves about the situation in Essen
VfB Hilden does not have these opportunities. Although VfB has been one of the top teams in the Oberliga Niederrhein for several years, promotion to the Regionalliga is not in sight.
Hilden coach Tim Schneider explained: “Unfortunately, the city doesn’t give us the opportunity to move up, but I’m very impressed with what’s happening here at the Uhlenkrug. There are staff everywhere and the club’s structure works well. We’ve been coming here for years and when you look at it, it’s really great. As a player, I would certainly feel at home here. I would be happy to see ETB move up.”
