1. FC Bocholt is in the quarterfinals of the Lower Rhine Cup after a 4:1 victory over Oberliga club ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen.
The quarterfinals of the Niederrhein Cup are almost complete. Regional league team 1. FC Bocholt became the seventh team to advance to the last eight with a comfortable 4-1 win over Oberliga side ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen.
Coach Sunay Acar’s team, who celebrated his first victory for his new club, made sure of the result right from the start. Thomas Gösweiner put FCB ahead after just nine minutes. ETB goalkeeper Ryan Valentine got a hand to the powerful header but couldn’t prevent it from hitting the back of the net.
Jan Wellers made it 2-0 shortly afterwards – and how. He shot from 30 meters out and the ball flew unstoppably into the corner (14). The game was effectively decided early on by a terrible mistake from the ETB keeper, who dribbled in his own penalty area and carelessly played the ball to Bogdan Shubin, who only had to tap it into the empty net (35).
Just three minutes later, things got even worse for Essen. After a corner from Bocholt captain Jan Holldack, Gösweiner rose highest and scored his second goal of the game (38th minute). The score at half-time was already 0-4 from the perspective of coach Damian Apfeld’s team, who were facing a debacle.
But it wasn’t to be, as Bocholt took their foot off the gas in the second half and rested key players for the upcoming league game against FC Gütersloh. ETB finally got their consolation goal in the 75th minute when Nico Bosnjak scored from 20 meters into the left corner to make it 1-4. That was also the final score.
The last quarter-finalist will be determined next week. Wuppertaler SV, currently looking for a new coach following the dismissal of René Klingbeil, will host FC Kray (October 30, 7:30 p.m.).
