On Sunday, Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund will face off in the top match of the Women’s Westphalia League. Here’s how the BVB coach is approaching the derby.
It is undoubtedly the highlight of the season so far in the Women’s Westphalia League. FC Schalke 04 welcomes Borussia Dortmund to the Revierderby on Sunday (October 27, 4 p.m.). There couldn’t be a bigger top match on this ninth matchday. Schalke is second with 23 points, while BVB is one point ahead at the top of the table.
This is the first time the two teams have met in the Westfalenliga – and the game will also take place in the venerable Parkstadion. It couldn’t be more atmospheric. The derby at Schalke is also a very special game for the BVB women, of course.
“I’m really looking forward to it, and the anticipation in the team is enormous. Of course, it’s a special game that both teams want to win. We want to have a perfect day,” Dortmund head coach Thomas Sulewski told Forecasting ahead of the eagerly awaited match.
When asked whether the coach had noticed any extra tension in his team during this week’s training sessions, he replied: ”So far, I haven’t noticed any extra tension. The girls are very focused on every game and have put themselves in a good position with their performances in recent weeks. We are taking a very close look at our opponents and preparing for all eventualities. At the end of the day, however, we want to stay true to ourselves and have a clear plan for how we want to play the game.”
Both teams have scored a lot of goals and conceded few. I expect a game that will live up to its name as a top match, but will probably also be characterized by tactics.

A clear plan will also be necessary, because nothing less than the top spot in the table is at stake. The 34-year-old B-license holder is well aware of this: “Both teams have scored a lot of goals and conceded few. I expect a game that will live up to its name as a top match, but it will probably also be characterized by tactics. In the end, small details can make the difference.”
Sulewski responded diplomatically when asked when Borussia Dortmund would win this derby. “…when we score one more goal than our opponents,” emphasized the BVB coach.
