HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes provides a scene for the year in review with an own goal in the Hamburg city derby at FC St. Pauli. In the end, however, it is still enough for an important point.
Despite what was probably the most bizarre own goal in the history of the Hamburg city derby by goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes, Hamburger SV managed to avoid defeat in the explosive match at FC St. Pauli.
With a 2-2 (0-2) draw in the top match of the 2nd Bundesliga, coach Tim Walter’s team salvaged a point against the neighborhood leaders in the 110th edition of the city championship and avoided a setback in the promotion battle. Nevertheless, HSV must fear for its second place after the 15th match day. The Kiez club (31 points), which remains unbeaten, is still three points ahead of its rival.
HSV keeper Heuer Fernandes provided the scene of the match in front of 29,153 spectators in the sold-out Millerntor Stadium. The visitors took a short goal kick in the 27th minute via Stephan Ambrosius and Guilherme Ramos. After Ramos passed to Heuer Fernandes, the ball bounced just in front of the goal.
The keeper tried to clear the ball out of the penalty area, but instead he blasted it into his own net to make it 0-2. It was the 31-year-old’s first own goal in his 180th second division game. St. Pauli captain Jackson Irvine (15th minute) had put his team ahead from a corner kick. Striker Robert Glatzel (58th minute) and Immanuel Pherai (60th minute) made up for their goalkeeper’s mistake within two minutes and saved a point.
Coach Fabian Hürzeler’s players dominated the game from the start, looking more mature and playing better. However, clear offensive actions were few and far between. HSV, meanwhile, disappointed at first and seemed to be continuing their disappointing away form this season at the Millerntor Stadium, just seven kilometers from the Volkspark.
After the break, snowfall made the pitch conditions more difficult. The visitors coped better with the slippery surface and equalized with a quick-fire double from Glatzel and Pherai. The game became more open. In the end, the draw was a fair result.
