Vonic or Berlinski – which striker should start?

On “Vonne Hafenstraße,” we discuss Rot-Weiss Essen’s failure to capitalize on opportunities. One player can’t please everyone.

Rot-Weiss Essen is not making the most of its chances this season. The third-division team had some good opportunities against SV Sandhausen, but RWE failed to convert several times in front of goal. As a result, coach Christoph Dabrowski’s team lost 1-2 (0-1) to SV Sandhausen on Saturday.

On “Vonne Hafenstraße,” our RWE video talk show, host Kira Alex talks to reporters Ralf Wilhelm and Justus Heinisch about the defeat. One thing is clear to the trio: a goal should have been scored in the first half. Leonardo Vonic, Isi Young, Lucas Brumme, and Marvin Obuz all failed to capitalize on excellent opportunities.

The panel engaged in a heated discussion about Vonic, a young talent who undoubtedly has potential but is currently unable to deliver, as evidenced by the missed opportunity. “You have to take those chances,” said Wilhelm, adding: “I don’t think it’s a question of whether he’s young or old, but whether you have the composure in front of goal. I maintain that you can’t learn that.”

Heinisch, on the other hand, says: “If you look at his record in Nuremberg, you can see that he can be clinical.” It’s all in the head, he believes. Rot-Weiss Essen will have a lot of fun with the striker, he thinks. But Ron Berlinski is champing at the bit and made a name for himself on Saturday.

The trio also talk about the performances of Isi Young and Eric Voufack – and assess how much Felix Götze has been missed by the team. Does the team need new players in the winter? In which positions? And how important are the remaining three games before the break? Alex, Wilhelm, and Heinisch discuss these questions too.
