Hertha dominates Elversberg, Paderborn defeats Hannover

Hertha is on a roll and climbs to eighth place. Schalke remains in 16th place despite its victory over Osnabrück.

Bundesliga relegation side Hertha BSC continues to move up in the 2nd Bundesliga. With a 5-1 (2-1) win over promoted SV Elversberg on Sunday, the Berliners remained unbeaten for the fifth game in a row and achieved their best season position so far with eighth place in the table. Florian Niederlechner (23rd, 61st, 67th), who has now scored five goals in his last three games, Linus Gechter (12th) and Jonjoe Kenny (71st) scored the goals that secured Hertha’s sixth win of the season.

In the battle to avoid relegation, Karlsruher SC and Hansa Rostock shared the points in a 2-2 (1-2) draw. This means that FC Schalke 04 remain in 16th place despite their 4-0 win over VfL Osnabrück. Igor Matanovic (45th) and Budu Siwsiwadse (81st) saved KSC from defeat after they had been 2-0 down.

Paderborn score late against ten Hannover players

In the third Sunday game, SC Paderborn secured a 1-0 (0-0) victory against Hannover 96 with a late goal from Florent Muslija (90+1), who had been playing with one man down since the 20th minute following Louis Schaub’s sending off. This means that the Lower Saxony side remain winless against the East Westphalians in the 2nd division.

FC St. Pauli thus remains the big favorite in the promotion battle. The league leaders kept their clean sheet even after the 2-2 draw in the city derby against Hamburger SV and lead the league with 14 games without defeat. In Friday evening’s top match, a slapstick own goal by HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes gave the hosts a 2-0 lead before coach Tim Walter’s team managed to equalize at 2-2.

FC St. Pauli’s expectations have risen. “The fact that we are annoyed about a draw against HSV is a big deal for FC St. Pauli,” said president Oke Göttlich. Holstein Kiel is now the closest pursuer after a 3-2 win against Wehen Wiesbaden. HSV dropped to third place.
