Fortuna Düsseldorf celebrated its second consecutive big win with a 5-0 victory over 1. FC Nürnberg. A striker who previously played for MSV Duisburg played a part in this success.
Vincent Vermeij seems to have found the right path. That’s often easy to say in hindsight, but it’s certainly true of the Fortuna Düsseldorf striker this season. While the 29-year-old has his sights set on promotion in the 2. Bundesliga, things are looking anything but rosy for his former clubs in Germany.
The fact that the Dutch striker can now dream of promotion to the Bundesliga is also down to his own improved performance. In the last two games – a 5-3 win against FC Schalke 04 and a 5-0 win against 1. FC Nürnberg – he scored five goals in total. Before that, he had only scored twice in eleven league games.
Vermeij has “arrived” in Düsseldorf
“I’ve just settled in now. I feel good and I can see that I can be important for the team,” said Vermeij after the win in Nuremberg, which he helped secure with a hat trick. Before rediscovering his scoring touch, the Dutchman suffered a concussion on November 3 and missed one game. Since then, things have been looking up for him – just like for Fortuna.
It’s a completely different story at his former clubs. Last season, Vermeij played for SC Freiburg II in the 3rd division, scoring 15 goals and helping the Breisgau club finish runners-up. However, his contract was not renewed after the season. At least he made his debut in the top flight under coach Christian Streich. SC Freiburg II is now deep in the relegation zone of the 3rd division.
Just like Vincent Vermeij’s second former club: MSV Duisburg. The Meiderichers celebrated their second win of the season on the last matchday, but are still deep in the relegation battle. During his time at MSV Duisburg, Vermeij scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists in 56 third division games. Duisburg would probably love to have a striker like him back, as they have the worst attack in the league with just ten goals.
Fortuna Düsseldorf will be back in action this week in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup at 1. FC Magdeburg (December 5, 6 p.m.). “We want to advance to the next round,” said Vermeij. Perhaps he can help his new club with his goals.
