Michael Zorc has been elected to the supervisory board at Borussia Dortmund. This marks his return to BVB after a two-year break.
Former sporting director Michael Zorc is back at Borussia Dortmund. The 62-year-old was elected to the supervisory board of the Bundesliga soccer club on Monday. Zorc was previously active at the Westphalia club as a professional player, sporting director and, most recently, as sporting director until 2022.
He wanted to “make his experience and expertise available to the board,” Zorc said at the beginning of the annual general meeting of Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA.
Managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke assured that he had “spent many hours persuading” Zorc to run for the position. “He already thought he was in the sunset of his career,” joked Watzke. “I am delighted that someone who has been at my side throughout his entire time at BVB is running for the supervisory board.”
Zorc initially presented himself to the shareholders in a humorous manner. “I would like to introduce myself briefly. My name is Michael Zorc, I am 62 years old, married, and have three children—and, for those who are interested, two grandchildren,” he said on the podium.
Because both Christian Kullmann and Bodo Löttgen are stepping down from the BVB supervisory board, two seats have become vacant – Christian Schmid was also elected. Matthias Bäumer, Judith Dommermuth, Bernd Geske, Urich Leitermann, Reinhold Lunow, and Bernhard Pellens were confirmed by the shareholders for the next four years on the supervisory board.
Zorc had been out of professional football since leaving his position as BVB sporting director. Zorc spent his entire career in Dortmund. During his playing days, he became the club’s record appearance holder with 572 games, making him a club legend.
After retiring, Zorc moved into management. From 1998 to 2005, he worked as sporting director, then as sporting director. Zorc celebrated three league titles and three DFB Cup victories as manager. He also won two championships, one DFB Cup and the Champions League in 1997 as a player. (with SID)
