The Spanish players’ expressions spoke volumes after the final whistle at the Brentford Community Stadium. The co-favourites for the European Championship title were beaten 2-0 by the DFB women’s team in west London.

While Germany’s group win is already decided before Saturday’s final group match against Finland, Denmark and Spain will then battle each other for the second quarter-final ticket. Both teams have three points each on their account.

Spanish national coach Jorge Vilda said after his women’s team’s defeat: “The girls were angry because we wanted to win the game. Apart from the two mistakes, we deserved more. Now we have to recover and do something for morale. Nothing is decided yet because there is still the match against Denmark.”

Nothing has been decided in Group C either, where the Swiss women will face co-favourites Sweden in the evening. Later in the evening, the Netherlands will play Portugal.

Germany will play either Norway or Austria in the first knockout round on 21.7.
