Mehmet Can Aydin leaves Schalke for a league rival

Eintracht Braunschweig seems to have taken a liking to FC Schalke 04 players. Now the next newcomer from Gelsenkirchen is on board.

Eintracht Braunschweig has apparently taken a liking to FC Schalke 04 players: After goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann and midfielder Lino Tempelmann, a new right-back is also arriving from Gelsenkirchen: On Wednesday, July 2, Braunschweig presented Mehmet Can Aydin. The 23-year-old has signed with the Lions until June 30, 2027. After Tobias Mohr (Standard Liège) and Marcin Kaminski (Wisla Plock), Aydin is now the last player of the trio whose expiring contracts were not renewed to find a new employer. He will wear the number eight shirt in Braunschweig.

“In Mehmet Can Aydin, we are getting a young player who already has experience from U-national teams, the first and second Bundesliga, and the Turkish Süper Lig, but who still has room for development. Mehmet can play on the right wing, but also in the central midfield positions, and he brings a lot of mentality to the team. He leaves his heart on the pitch, can play with high intensity, and is versatile with the ball. In talks with us, he showed how much he wants to join us,” said Eintracht sporting director Benjamin Kessel in a club statement. Aydin joined FC Schalke 04 from Borussia Mönchengladbach’s youth academy in the summer of 2014. He fought his way through the Knappenschmiede academy to the first team. After three seasons and irregular appearances in the first and second divisions, he spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Trabzonspor in Turkey, where he played 23 games. Last season, Aydin played in 31 competitive games for Schalke, providing three assists.

Aydin is the next former Schalke player to join Braunschweig

The 23-year-old will now continue his career in Braunschweig. “I’m very happy that the move to Eintracht has worked out and I’m looking forward to our time together in Braunschweig. I still know some of my teammates from my time at Schalke, so hopefully it will be easy for me to settle in. I’ve played at the EINTRACHT-STADION myself and know the energy that can come from the stands. I’m really looking forward to that,” he said.

After Hoffmann, Tempelmann, Sebastian Polter, and Sidi Sané, Aydin is the fifth former Schalke player in Braunschweig’s current squad. Center back Lukas Frenkert also played for Schalke’s second team for a year. Shortly before Christmas, on the 17th matchday of the second division, everyone involved will be reunited with the Royal Blues.
