After dress rehearsal, Gunkel sees much work to be done and wants two new players

Rot-Weiß Oberhausen ended their final test match against Twente Enschede with a 2-2 draw. Coach Sebastian Gunkel still has a few wishes left to fulfill.

SC Rot-Weiß Oberhausen has completed its dress rehearsal ahead of the start of the Regionalliga West season. The opponent was Twente Enschede, a Dutch first division team that had played FC Schalke 04 just a few hours earlier. In Gelsenkirchen, the two teams played to a 0-0 draw. At the Niederrheinstadion in Oberhausen, a completely different team took the field for the visitors. The final score was 2-2, with Twente taking the lead both times and RWO equalizing twice. “That was a really good test. Twente demanded everything from us. We did well and made a lot of adjustments during the game. We played courageously and are therefore very satisfied. We were behind twice and came back both times. Two goals from set pieces is also important for the team so that they know we have a certain quality there,” said RWO coach Sebastian Gunkel, summarizing the test. The Kleeblätter made few changes for a test match and played intensely. The young team from Enschede challenged Oberhausen with high pressing, which pleased the coach.

We want to sign two more players. One offensive and one defensive. Obviously, the sooner the better, but ultimately we need to get the right players, so we need to be patient.

“Today, everyone realized that they had to give it their all. That’s what preparation is for, so that you can improve and give 90 plus on the first match day. That will certainly be the case in the first two or three games. But we also saw that we have a good quality and broad bench,” explained Gunkel.

The team was not entirely satisfied with its preparations so far. Defeats against BW Lohne (1-2) and SC Verl (1-5) indicated that there is still some work to be done: “We had some ups and downs in our preparations and said at the time that we still had a lot of work to do. The most important thing is that we achieve consistency. Accordingly, we still have a lot of work ahead of us, but I am quite satisfied with the official conclusion of the preparations and how they went,“ clarified the Oberhausen coach. There are also likely to be some changes on the transfer market. It is well known that Gunkel would like to sign two more players: ”We want two more players. One offensive and one defensive. Of course, the sooner the better, but ultimately we need to get the right players, so we need to be patient.” Rot-Weiß Oberhausen’s new Regionalliga West season kicks off this Saturday (July 26). The opening game will be played at their home ground, the Niederrhein-Stadion, against FC Gütersloh. Kick-off is at 2 p.m.
