Northeast kickoff canceled – for a curious reason

In the Northeast Regional League, ZFC Meuselwitz was scheduled to start the season on Friday evening at Hertha BSC. That didn’t happen.

Since Friday evening, the ball has been rolling again in all Regional League divisions. In the west, Fortuna Cologne celebrated a 2-0 victory at Wuppertaler SV. The U23 teams of Hertha BSC and ZFC Meuselwitz would probably like to be able to say the same. The clubs from the Northeast division were also supposed to start the new season on Friday evening. However, this did not happen for a curious reason: the team bus from Meuselwitz was stuck in traffic for hours on its way to the away game in the capital. On the A9 in the Dessau region, an accident caused a complete closure of the road. The match was originally scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. Due to noise restrictions, the game could not start later than 8 p.m. This one-hour buffer was not enough for Meuselwitz to arrive on time. Their arrival was delayed further and further. The 180 kilometers from the Thuringian city to Berlin takes about three hours by car in normal traffic. The result was a last-minute cancellation. Both clubs, together with the referees and the league director, agreed on this decision. A new date for the match has not yet been set. A decision will be made soon. According to Hertha, tickets already purchased for the match will remain valid for the rescheduled game.

If this does not take place within the next few days, Carl Zeiss Jena will be Hertha BSC’s new opening opponent. The U23s will play there next Friday. Meuselwitz will host SV Babelsberg on the second matchday.

Despite the cancellation, matches were played in the Northeast Regional League on Friday evening. Rot-Weiß Erfurt defeated FSV Luckenwalde 2-1. VSG Altglienicke also celebrated a successful start, defeating Hertha Zehlendorf 2-0.
