SV Meppen was trailing Altona 93 1-4 after 66 minutes, but managed to secure a point in the end. One of the key players: former RWE striker Simon Engelmann.
Simon Engelmann has been playing for SV Meppen in the Regionalliga Nord since this summer. The former Rot-Weiss Essen striker’s new club got off to a perfect start to the new season with two wins against Kickers Emden (1-0) and VfB Lübeck (3-1).
Last Saturday, however, SVM suffered its first loss of points, but it still felt like a victory. After 66 minutes, Meppen was already trailing 1-4 against newly promoted Altona 93. Everything pointed to the title favorites’ first defeat of the season, but then SVM launched a spectacular comeback in the final stages.
Led by Engelmann, who came on at half-time, Meppen pulled back to within one goal with two quick strikes in a matter of seconds from the former RWE striker (76th) and Julian Ulbricht (77th). Meppen was back in the game and sensed its chance for a comeback – and actually managed to equalize in the 89th minute. And it was Engelmann again who took advantage of a rebound and slotted home to make it 4-4 – madness!
These were the 36-year-old’s first two goals for his new club and a great recommendation for his first start after coming off the bench against Emden and Lübeck. After three matchdays, SV Meppen now has seven points and is third behind SV Drochtersen/Assel and SSV Jeddeloh II, both of which are still without a point. Engelmann celebrated great success with Rot-Weiss Essen Engelmann has an impressive resume. With 182 goals, the 1.88-meter-tall center forward is the record goalscorer in the Regionalliga West and has been the league’s top scorer four times. From 2020 to 2023, he made his mark at Rot-Weiss Essen. He won the Niederrheinpokal twice with RWE and was an important part of Essen’s promotion-winning team in the 2021/22 season. However, his most statistically successful spell was at SV Rödinghausen, where he was under contract between 2017 and 2020 and from 2023 to 2025. Engelmann scored 97 goals and provided 32 assists in 163 appearances for the East Westphalia club, also winning the SVR Regionalliga title in the 2019/20 season.
In Meppen, the veteran now wants to make a fresh start in the late autumn of his career and fight for promotion to the 3rd division.
