Due to the transfer of a former player – a windfall for S04 and VfL’s rivals

The cash registers are ringing at Hertha BSC: The Old Lady is benefiting from a resale clause in the contract of her former player Omar Alderete, who is now moving to England for a large sum of money.

Hertha BSC certainly imagined the start of the season in the 2nd Bundesliga differently. After a 1-2 defeat at Schalke on the opening day, the capital club, considered by many experts and fans to be a favorite for promotion, only managed a 0-0 draw at home against Karlsruher SC on the second matchday.

Nevertheless, there is good news for the Old Lady these days – for financial reasons. Two years after the final sale of center back Omar Alderete, who was sold to Spanish club FC Getafe for four million euros at the time, the Paraguayan international has once again brought money into the Berlin club’s coffers.

At the time, Hertha secured a sell-on clause, which has now come into effect because Alderete was signed by Premier League newcomers AFC Sunderland on Tuesday. According to ‘The Athletic’, the traditional English club is paying the equivalent of around €12 million to Getafe. A further €1.2 million could be added in bonuses.

Thanks to the resale clause, which is said to be between 10 and 30 percent, the Berlin club will receive a handsome sum. This means that at least 1.2 million euros and, in the best case, up to four million euros will go to the second division club.

The 28-year-old moved from FC Basel to Hertha in October 2020 and made a total of 17 Bundesliga appearances for the Blue and Whites. However, Alderete only really found happiness in Spain, where the Old Lady had loaned him twice. First to Valencia CF (2021/22), then to Getafe CF (2022/23), who finally signed him permanently in the summer of 2023.

The Berliners’ sporting action continues next Monday (August 18, 6 p.m.), when coach Stefan Leitl’s team faces league rivals Preußen Münster in the first round of the DFB Cup. The next league game will then follow on Sunday, August 24, at Darmstadt 98.
