Henri Matter earned special applause with his dream goal in VfL Bochum II’s 2-2 draw against SSVg Velbert. After the match, the offensive player was available for a media interview.
After promotion, VfL Bochum II strengthened its squad in the summer with a mix of external talent and experience in order to make a decent impression in the Regionalliga West. The new signing with the most fourth division games under his belt joined the club from Fortuna Cologne and is an attacking midfielder named Henri Matter.
The 24-year-old came to the Ruhr region with a recommendation from 136 Regionalliga games. He scored 25 goals and provided 23 assists. With his goal-scoring prowess, he is expected to help coach Heiko Butscher’s young team secure their place in the league. In the VfL reserve team’s 2-2 draw against SSVg Velbert, the Cologne-born player finally scored his debut goal – and it was nothing less than a real eye-catcher. From around 25 meters out, Matter took heart and curled the ball into the corner to give his side a 2-0 lead. Nevertheless, even this Sunday shot was not enough to secure Bochum’s second team their first win of the season. After the game, the attacking player was available for a media interview. Henri Matter on… …the 2-2 draw against SSVg Velbert: “It’s very disappointing. We were the better team by far, but we didn’t manage to seal the deal. After conceding two goals, it feels like a defeat. We were in the game and had the confidence. But in the league, you can always concede goals, it can happen quickly.”
… his dream goal to make it 2-0: “That was intentional. I had a good finish and a bit of space. So I thought, I’ll take it. It worked out well.”
… dealing with loan players who join the U21s: “That’s the lot of a U21 team. It’s part of the game. We can all deal with it. If someone comes down from above, then he plays. We have to accept that and do it well.“
… his partnership with talented midfielder Cajetan Lenz: ”He played a great game. Cajetan is a good guy, a great guy. It’s not for nothing that he’s already played twice at the top. He’s doing very well.”
… the next task at SV Rödinghausen: “We’ve done well in most areas recently. We’ll approach the game against Rödinghausen in the same way. Our last opponents didn’t create many chances; they made the most of the few they had. We just failed to seal the deal early on.”
