“Fucking Red Bull” – Trouble between Sandhausen and RB Leipzig fans

RB Leipzig struggled to a 4-2 victory over regional league side SV Sandhausen in the DFB Cup. There was trouble in the stands.

Fans of SV Sandhausen and RB Leipzig clashed during the first round of the DFB Cup. The incident was triggered in the first half by a banner held by SVS supporters reading “Fucking Red Bull!” The home fans tried to move the banner towards the RB block using a rope, but were unsuccessful.

Moments later, several fans were facing each other on the fences, as the home and away stands are right next to each other in Sandhausen. The match was not interrupted. However, the stadium announcer instructed the Sandhausen fans not to display any more “derogatory banners.” Otherwise, the match could be interrupted, he said.

The Saxony club has repeatedly had to contend with hostility. Traditional football fans are bothered by the influence of beverage company Red Bull, whose financial support made RB Leipzig so successful in the first place.

In terms of sport, it was an eventful match. Leon Ampadu Wiafe gave Sandhausen an early lead (3′), but Yan Diomande equalized for RB immediately (6′). Just twelve minutes later, Jahn Herrmann put SVS back in front, before RB defensive leader Willi Orban made it 2-2. Sandhausen held their own against the big favorites for a long time, but ultimately had to admit defeat. Ezechiel Banzunzi headed in to make it 3-2 in the 79th minute. Xavi finally put the game to bed (90+6) and sent RB into the second round.
