Third win in three games – Elgert still sees room for improvement

Schalke’s U19 team won 2-0 (2-0) against Arminia Bielefeld, but coach Norbert Elgert was dissatisfied despite the third league win in a row.

FC Schalke 04 won its third game in the U19 DFB Youth League, defeating Arminia Bielefeld 2-0 (2-0). Coach Norbert Elgert was not satisfied with his team’s performance despite the three points.

After a tough opening few minutes, the hosts grew into the game and took the lead in the 35th minute through their top scorer Malik Tubic. Shortly before the half-time whistle, Schalke made it 2-0: A shot from Clinton Edem Wilson was deflected unstoppably after a strong solo run, leaving Bielefeld keeper Mino Joel Jäger helpless. Although the young Schalke team has made a strong start to the season with nine points from three games and a goal difference of 11-2, S04 coach Elgert is demanding a significant improvement in performance in the coming weeks.

“After this busy week, we’re quickly focusing on our next game on Sunday against Münster and want to do a lot of things better than we did against Bielefeld,” Elgert said after the game.

From the 68-year-old’s point of view, his team did not undeservedly win the game, but it could have quickly gone the other way. Despite scoring two goals in the first 45 minutes, Elgert did not think the first half was much better than the second. “If you write ‘nothing’ above the line after the first half and ‘nothing’ again below the line after the second half, then you end up with ‘nothing’,” Elgert calculated in his usual direct manner.

In the current season, his team has only played one “really good game,” in the 5-2 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach on the opening day. The game against Bielefeld showed that his team is not there yet, even though Elgert sees Schalke as a “top team” in the future.
