Sportfreunde Siegen leads the Regionalliga West. But in the Westphalia Cup, they suffered a surprising 0-1 defeat against TuS Erndtebrück in the second round.
It goes without saying that Sportfreunde Siegen were the favorites in the Westphalia Cup second round match against TuS Erndtebrück, who play two divisions below them in the Westphalia League – even though Erndtebrück had a good start to the season and Siegen did not field their best team.
Sportfreunde have made a strong start to the Regionalliga West, which they currently lead. And against their neighbors from Erndtebrück, coach Thorsten Nehrbauer’s team initially took control of the game.
But the Westfalenliga team kept a clean sheet and had their first big chance after 36 minutes. Lars Schardt shot from a tight angle but only hit the side netting. Nevertheless, the favored Sportfreunde clearly had the better of the game at halftime.
But after the break, something happened. And Nehrbauer was not happy about it. Schardt, who will remain a Sportfreunde player until the summer of 2025, scored the 1-0 for the underdogs after 56 minutes, prompting Siegen’s coach to respond with a quadruple substitution. Cagatay Kader, Hamza Saghiri, Jannik Krämer, and Shaibou Oubeyapwa, who had been left on the bench until then, came into the game.
From then on, the visitors focused even more on defending and counterattacking, and they did well. Even with the new personnel, the Sportfreunde could hardly find any solutions, so time ran out. In injury time, Kader had another great chance, but failed to convert.
So, after 93 minutes, TuS Erndtebrück actually won 1-0. A huge surprise. While Wittgenstein can look forward to the third round, Nehrbauer and Sportfreunde Siegen are out.
