After middle finger scandal – DFB suspends Union coach Baumgart

Union coach Steffen Baumgart’s outburst during the game in Frankfurt has consequences. Baumgart will have to watch the home game against his former employer from the stands.

The German Football Association (DFB) Control Committee has suspended 1. FC Union Berlin coach Steffen Baumgart for one championship game for unsportsmanlike conduct. The DFB also imposed a fine of €15,000. The club has accepted the verdict. After the referee turned away, the 53-year-old left the coaching zone and kicked a paper ball from a Frankfurt choreography far onto the field, whereupon the referee showed Baumgart the red card.

Just one minute earlier, the coach had briefly shown his middle finger towards the pitch after Frankfurt converted a penalty, the sports court added. However, it assumed that this gesture was not intended to insult any specific person. The fact that Baumgart apologized for his misconduct in the referee’s cabin was also considered a mitigating factor.

Baumgart will have to watch the next home game against his former employer Hamburger SV from the stands. He is not allowed to enter the inner area for half an hour before and half an hour after the final whistle. He is also not allowed to contact his team during this period.
