MSV Duisburg is riding a wave of success in the 3rd division. A former MSV captain is even reaching a few shelves higher.
Now that’s a remarkable career: Go Ahead Eagles sensationally won the Dutch Cup last season and are now rewarded with a place in the Europa League. Right in the thick of it: Gerrit Nauber. The former captain of MSV Duisburg is a regular in central defense. This has also been the case in the current season, where he has missed just 13 minutes in six league games. The start was solid with nine points. In the Europa League, a home game against Steaua Bucharest was on the schedule on Thursday. Nauber was on the pitch in the first half but was substituted at half-time after receiving a yellow card. Even though the game was ultimately lost 0-1, it will remain a special match for the former Duisburg player. It was his first game in a UEFA European competition. Nauber was relegated with MSV Duisburg in 2019. He began his soccer career at TuS Glane before moving to VfL Osnabrück via Viktoria 08 Georgsmarienhütte. In 2011, he joined Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s second team, where he played in all 36 league games in his first season.
In the summer of 2012, Nauber moved to Sportfreunde Lotte, with whom he won the Regionalliga West championship twice and achieved promotion to the 3. Liga in 2016. He was also team captain there from February 2015. After promotion, he made his debut in the 3rd division and scored his first goal in the new league in a 3-0 win against Werder Bremen II.
Nauber signed with MSV Duisburg for the 2017/18 season and played 64 second division games for the Zebras before moving to SV Sandhausen after their relegation in 2019. After two years in Sandhausen, he moved to the Dutch Eredivisie in 2021 to join Go Ahead Eagles Deventer, for whom he has been playing ever since.
