Sportclub Verl continues its successful run in the 3rd division. The East Westphalians won 2-1 at 1. FC Schweinfurt.
For a long time, it looked as though newly promoted 1. FC Schweinfurt would end the English week on a high note after two 1-5 defeats against Aachen and Ulm.
However, Verl’s Chilohem Onuoha and Julian Stark had other ideas with their goals in the 78th and 88th minutes. The visitors won 2-1. To make matters worse, Schweinfurt’s Lauris Bausenwein was shown a yellow-red card in injury time. While the home side remain bottom after their ninth defeat in ten games, Verl jumped to sixth place thanks to four wins in their last six games. Victor Kleinhenz, coach of 1. FC Schweinfurt, summed up the game on “Magenta Sport”: “We wanted to approach the game differently than in recent weeks and defend deep. We knew that Verl has a brutal style of play and that we would have to suffer in many phases of the game. I take my hat off to the boys for how they got through many passages of the game. We had huge chances to score, but when you’re at the bottom of the table, things like this happen, as is currently the case for us. Nevertheless, the team has a really good character and great morale. We will regroup, shake it off, and prepare for the next games.”
Tobias Strobl, coach of SC Verl, summed up: “Since I’ve been coach in Verl, the first half was our worst half. We were so impatient and sloppy, our positioning was so poor. It was just bad from start to finish. But I have a good team that is reasonable at half-time and doesn’t think: What is he talking about? No, they knew: Wow, that just wasn’t good. In the second half, we made some adjustments. That was good, so we got back in the game and turned it around. (…) I know we have 16 points after 10 games, but I’m not interested in the table. That might distract us. It’s a nice snapshot, but we have to detach ourselves from it, look at what was good today and build on that.”
