MSV remains unstoppable in Uerdingen – even under the floodlights

MSV Duisburg remains unbeaten in all competitions this season. The derby at KFC Uerdingen was also won with ease.

MSV Duisburg lived up to its role as favorite in the Lower Rhine Cup round of 16. After their defeat in the 2023 cup competition, the third division leaders took revenge with a 3-1 (3-0) win at Lower Rhine Oberliga club KFC Uerdingen.

MSV coach Dietmar Hirsch made two changes to the team that played against Rostock (2-2) in front of 9,341 spectators. Ben Schlicke played in central defense for captain Alexander Hahn. Max Dittgen replaced Rasim Bulic in the starting lineup. And MSV immediately showed that it was not willing to allow any doubts about the winner to arise. Thilo Töpken had the first chance after just four minutes, but he missed it.

Nevertheless, the favorites sealed the deal early on – from set pieces. First, Joshua Bitter put the Zebras ahead in the 16th minute after a cross from Conor Noß.

Three minutes later, Christian Viet converted a handball penalty, after Meiderich had almost made it 2-0 a minute earlier.

After the early shock, KFC tried to get back into the game. The Krefeld team also had a good chance, but Etienne-Noel Reck missed (25th minute).

After 37 minutes, it went dark. A floodlight mast failed after a short circuit. Half-time was brought forward, followed by only eight minutes of play, then a flying change to the second half.

And Uerdingen had a chance to equalize immediately after the restart, still in the first half. They missed and conceded the 3-0 on the other side – Töpken’s goal was then the decisive one.

In the second half, MSV made three substitutions, including the introduction of striker Florian Krüger, who hit the post shortly after coming on.

After that, the game petered out somewhat. In the end, the hosts from Uerdingen at least managed to pull one back, with Yasin-Cemal Kaya scoring five minutes before the end to make it 1-3. It was at least the best goal of the evening.
