Mroß wants to “continue riding the wave of success” – Pache talks about promotion

SG Wattenscheid 09 leads the Oberliga Westfalen table. Goalkeeper Joshua Mroß is enjoying the moment. Coach Christopher Pache wants to stay at the top until the very end.

SG Wattenscheid 09, under coach Christopher Pache, is unbeaten after 15 match days and leads the Oberliga Westfalen table. Goalkeeper Joshua Mroß, who recently extended his contract, is also a key factor in the team’s outstanding season so far.

The 29-year-old Mroß moved to Lohrheide last winter from league rivals ASC 09 Dortmund. So far this season, the keeper has kept six clean sheets and conceded only nine goals. He has thus played a major role in SGW’s positive run.

But can Wattenscheid do as Bayer Leverkusen did in the 2023/24 Bundesliga season and remain undefeated until the very end?

“It’s not impossible,” Mroß said after the 2-2 draw in the top match against Westfalia Rhynern on the last matchday. “But I don’t want to jinx it. We still have some difficult games ahead of us in the coming weeks, including the cup match against Gütersloh. We will do our best to ride the wave of success for as long as possible.”

Points Table

SGW currently tops the table with 34 points, two points ahead of SV Lippstadt in second place. If things continue like this, nothing stands in the way of a return to Germany’s fourth-highest division. But what does Wattenscheid’s successful coach Pache have to say about a possible promotion to the Regionalliga West?

We’ve had a very, very exciting season so far. Everything is just falling into place at the club at the moment.

“We are athletes and of course we always want to be promoted,” explained the coach. “However, it takes a lot to achieve that. As long as we can compete at the top, we’ll enjoy it. We’ve had a very, very exciting season so far. Everything is just falling into place at the club at the moment.”

Before the season, the club set itself the goal of finishing in the top five of the league. Pache and his team are taking a wait-and-see approach to see where they end up. “In the winter, when we’ve played every opponent, we can take stock and see where the trend is going,” revealed the coach. “However, we’re taking a relaxed approach and are just happy to be at the top of the table at the moment.”

This Saturday (November 22, 3:30 p.m.), SG Wattenscheid 09 will play at home against SV Schermbeck and has the chance to extend its lead at the top of the table.
