Kevin Behrens attacks and insults teammate – club responds

In a friendly match for FC Lugano, former national player Kevin Behrens attacks a teammate and insults him. The club announces consequences.

It’s the 72nd minute of Friday’s friendly match between FC Lugano and Viktoria Pilsen. Kevin Behrens, the Swiss striker, appears to initiate the press and runs determinedly forward. The problem? The 34-year-old is not running towards his opponent, but towards his teammate! Georgios Koutsias reacts in astonishment before Behrens pushes him to the ground and shouts at him. “You little freak, be quiet,” he is reported to have said, according to Blick. Another teammate intervenes and calms the situation down. Behrens is substituted immediately afterwards. (Click here for the video).

It is still unclear what exactly prompted Behrens to act in this way. In any case, FC Lugano announced that there would be consequences. “FC Lugano strongly condemns the incident during the friendly match against FC Viktoria Plzeň involving Kevin Behrens and Georgios Koutsias, as well as the related events,” the club said, adding: “The matter will be dealt with and resolved internally; the club will examine what disciplinary measures to take against the two players involved. No further statements will be made on this matter and no additional comments will be given.”

Incidentally, Pilsen won the three 45-minute test match 4-2, with Behrens even scoring the temporary 1-1 equalizer.

Former RWE player Behrens has caused a stir before

Behrens already made negative headlines in September 2024 when he allegedly refused to sign a special rainbow-colored jersey from his then employer VfL Wolfsburg and made a homophobic remark.

The national player (one international cap), who was under contract with Rot-Weiss Essen in the 2015/2016 season, apologized to SportBild at the time.

“My spontaneous comments were absolutely unacceptable. I would like to apologize for that. The issue was discussed internally, and I ask for your understanding that I do not wish to comment further on it,” he said at the time.
