Sportfreunde Siegen has strengthened its squad once again. A goalkeeper will be arriving in Siegerland this week.
Sportfreunde Siegen will resume league action in the Regionalliga West on Saturday. The home game against Borussia Dortmund II at the Leimbachstadion is on the schedule.
BVB II, a good keyword: Forecasting has learned that Dortmund goalkeeper Marcel Johnen will be transferring to Sportfreunde Siegen. The deal is expected to be officially announced this week before Sportfreunde’s match against Borussia’s reserve team.
During the 2024/2025 season, 23-year-old Johnen lost his place in the starting line-up at Alemannia Aachen to Jan Olschowsky, on loan from Borussia Mönchengladbach, and ultimately did not receive a new contract at Tivoli. In the summer of 2025, the Alemannia goalkeeper then joined Borussia Dortmund’s second team. Johnen was also unable to secure a regular place in goal at Strobelallee. He only played twice for BVB II (conceding three goals). Now he will try to win a place in the starting line-up at Sportfreunde Siegen under head coach Boris Schommers. Here he will be competing with Justin Ospelt and Leon Klußmann. Johon then moved to the youth team of Bayer 04 Leverkusen, where he played for other youth teams and, among other things, played in the UEFA Youth League against the U-teams of Juventus Turin and Atletico Madrid. After a spell at 1. FC Saarbrücken, his path led him back to Tivoli in 2022.
In the following three years, he celebrated the club’s return to the 3. Liga and the 2024 Bitburger Cup victory in the black and yellow jersey before joining Borussia Dortmund II on July 1, 2025. Johnen has made 71 competitive appearances for Alemannia Aachen. In the Regionalliga West, the goalkeeper has played 54 games (51 goals conceded) to date.
