Sportfreunde Siegen have bolstered their squad once again. A goalkeeper is set to arrive in the Siegerland region this week.
Sportfreunde Siegen return to action in the Regionalliga West on Saturday. They will host Borussia Dortmund II at Leimbachstadion.
BVB II, a good cue: As Forecasting has learned, Dortmund goalkeeper Marcel Johnen will be joining Sportfreunde Siegen. The deal is expected to be officially announced this week before Sportfreunde’s match against Borussia’s reserves.
During the 2024/2025 season, 23-year-old Johnen lost his starting spot at Alemannia Aachen to Borussia Mönchengladbach loanee Jan Olschowsky and ultimately did not receive a new contract at Tivoli. In the summer of 2025, the goalkeeper who had helped Alemannia secure promotion then joined Borussia Dortmund’s second team.
Johnen was unable to secure a starting spot in goal at Strobelallee either. He made only two appearances for BVB II (conceding three goals). Now he will try to secure a starting spot in goal for Sportfreunde Siegen under head coach Boris Schommers. There, he will be competing with Justin Ospelt and Leon Klußmann.
Johnen, a native of Eschweiler, came into contact with Alemannia at an early age: Between 2012 and 2018, he played in the youth ranks of the Black and Yellows. Johnen then moved to the youth system at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, where he progressed through various youth teams and, among other things, played in the UEFA Youth League against the youth teams of Juventus Turin and Atlético Madrid. After a stint with 1. FC Saarbrücken, his path led him back to the Tivoli in 2022.
Over the next three years, he celebrated the club’s return to the 3. Liga and the 2024 Bitburger Cup victory while wearing the black-and-yellow jersey, before joining Borussia Dortmund II on July 1, 2025. Johnen has made 71 competitive appearances for Alemannia Aachen. In the Regionalliga West, the goalkeeper has made 54 appearances to date (51 goals conceded).
